In the spirit of Halloween, I want to talk about the tarot, it's function and purpose. Recently I have heard a lot of people say that the tarot and the idea of getting a reading makes them nervous. They are unsure that they would want to know what the cards have to say, as if it could only be bad news and doom and gloom. I understand that the unknown is mysterious and can be scary, so let me dis-spell the myth that the tarot, when used, opens a door and allows something dark to come through and wreck havoc.
The tarot is a tool to be used, like a dictionary is to a scholar, or a knife is to a chef. First, every practitioner uses the tarot differently, receives messages differently and interprets the messages differently. Some get their messages from spirit or guardians, others from intuition or empathy, just to name a few examples. Those who receive messages from spirit or guardians always ask for permission and guidance before each reading, they ask for the most important message that will best aid their client on their journey. Nothing scary so far, right? No lost souls or enslaved demons...
For me, as an empath, the tarot is more accurately described as a translation dictionary. I connect with each client by experiencing their emotions thus allowing me to essentially read their soul. This can be extremely overwhelming for me since every thought we have has an emotion tied to it. That's a lot of emotion! It's a lot to filter through, so I use the tarot to focus and zero in on the most important message for my client. Because I do not receive messages from a third party or outside source, the purpose of my readings are to validate my client's thoughts and feelings, to aid them in measuring their options and making the best choices for themselves. I speak on behalf of their inner voice that does not get the attention it needs. My clients time and time again have said that they already knew what they needed to do, but didn't want to, because change is often difficult and uncomfortable. However, after the reading, they feel at peace and confident in the actions they need to take.
I'm not trying to convince you that there is no bad news to be had from a reading. These readings are about you, for you, and life has it's ups and downs. Shit happens, we fall down, then we get back up stronger than we were before. Life is one big learning opportunity, and the best practitioners will tell you if something bad comes up in a reading, you must look at it as a lesson to be learned and to grow from the experience. We are here for you and we only want the best for you. We want to see you succeed. I hope next time you meet a tarot reader, you will better understand what it is they are offering you and have no reservations or fear because it's no longer the unknown.
